Glancing outside as I write my final President’s Page, it does appear that we may have a green Christmas this year.  Youngsters may be unhappy about this but at our age, we know that Santa can still maneuver down here from the North Pole.  

  

Our Christmas Shine was a fun-filled evening, as is our tradition.  Once again the Seniors Centre was festooned for the season thanks to Jim and Phil and all the helpers. The meal was well presented and then we were treated to nice dance music by our DJs for the evening, Jordan and Mariah.

Jim and Donna Savage received the Rodeo Skilled Driving Trophy and John and Thérese Power were recognized with the Crank of the Year Trophy for all the extra activity in area parades with dignitaries in their 1952 MG TD and once again, the President’s Trophy was presented to Ron and Dawn Roy scoring highest attendance at events and meetings. 

We were visited by Santa who becomes more photogenic each year and he presented a variety of gifts to deserving members.  These included our Treasurer Wendy TerMarsch,  tour leader, band manager and parade float organizer Neil Videto and Lori who have also been our Benevolence Committee, and Auctioneer John Hanson and to Gale who thoughtfully picked out the door prizes for the evening.  Lastly to my hubby Dave who works ‘behind the scenes’ in providing the ‘right fit’ for our Flying Quail and ACCP web site.  I salute you all for your contribution and support through the year.  Thank you.

We look forward to our new 2016-2017 club executive and will welcome Jim Savage as President.  Stepping up as Vice-President we welcome Larry Smith and Dave Lemkay as Secretary with Wendy TerMarsch returning as Treasurer.  Bob and Mae MacCauley are continuing to assemble and distribute the Flying Quail and John and Gale Hanson are taking on the important Benevolence Committee.  It promises to be another good term going forward. 

  

As I hand over the chain of office at the January meeting to Jim and become Past President, I have great memories from the past four years.  I am honoured to have been your President as we have enjoyed remarkable tours throughout Renfrew and Pontiac Counties.  I am humbled, yet happy to have received kind words of appreciation from so many of you in person and in calls, cards and gifts.

President's Page ~ December 2015

As we look back over the past twelve months, ACCP enjoyed another busy, fun-filled year on tour and at events throughout our Ottawa Valley.  We kicked off 2015 with a Valentine’s Day / Family Day Sleigh Ride and dinner at Northfork in Chichester.  Spring events followed with the Sneak-a-Peak evening at Champlain Trail Museum, the Sterling Car Show & Flea Market, Smiths Falls Car Show & Craft sale, Champlain Strawberry Social, Killaloe and  Merrickville Car Shows.  

Then summer car shows at Pinewood with Antique Car Tunes, Rankin Antique & Classic Auto Show,  Ice-cream Cruise nights at Hugli’s Blueberry Ranch, Denbigh-Griffith Show & Shine, Petawawa 150th Antique Car Show, President’s Mystery Tour to Calabogie Motor Sports Park, Denbigh-Griffith Show, the International Kayaking Celebration and parade in Beachburg. 

Entering the fall season, our Rodeo at Lake Dore Park, Barrie Flea Market, the Mount St. Patrick’s Parish Supper, Ocktoberfest in Ladysmith, Supples Landing Car Show, Mullen’s “Four Seasons” Colour Tour through the beautiful upper Madawaska  Valley, 50s/60s Dance at Spruceholme and now as we face winter with a float in the Pembroke Santa Claus Parade of Lights and traditional ACCP Christmas Shine.  

Throughout the year our monthly meetings were always lively at the Kingburger, with a couple of the summer meetings on the lawn at Pembroke’s Waterfront Park.   What a year it was!

Plans are well underway for our Christmas Shine for December 12^th.  Tickets are available TerMarsch Fuels at the cost of $30.00 per person. Thanks to Jim Savage and his team as they organize the special evening of socializing and Christmas meal of roast beef and turkey, music, a visit by Santa with gifts and door prizes. Family and friends are welcome to join us at the Seniors Drop-in Centre in Pembroke.  Trophies and awards will be presented to those deserving folks who shone (along with their cars) with their participation throughout the year. 

  

As we continue with our busy lives, let’s take time to remember member families who are experiencing difficulty. To Muriel Rolfe and family, whose daughter is hospitalized, we offer our prayers at this most trying time.

As your President for the past four years, I take this opportunity to extend my appreciation to all of you.  It’s because of all of you that our club flourishes in the hobby that we all enjoy.  I thank our past executive treasurer, Wendy TerMarsch and Secretary Muriel Rolfe.  We made a good team and with support of our helpful members, we can look back proudly on the wonderful car-related events and the fellowship that has ensued.

I welcome our  newly acclaimed executive that will take the reins on January with Jim Savage as President,  Larry Smith, as Vice-President,  Dave Lemkay as Secretary and our returning Treasurer, Wendy TerMarsch. Thank you for stepping up.  Thank you to all the members and past executive that have made this club what it is today – a strong, friendly and viable club entering our 53^rd year in good spirits.

Our December 2^nd meeting at the Kingburger following the social hour starts at 7:00. From my family to yours, we wish you and yours all very Merry Christmas and good health in the New Year!

Hello to all ACCP members & friends:

As we face November we can look back on another good year of club activities.  Blessed with a beautiful old fashioned summer and autumn and with so many active members, clearly our club is in good shape.

Our annual Colour Tour was outstanding!  With foliage still in vibrant colour, the 300 km route planned by Shirley and Ellsworth Mullen was a great way to wind up our driving months.  To add to the flavour, we were treated to a few snow squalls just to add some “icing on the cake”. Thanks to Shirley and Ellsworth, who hosted the marvelous time together.  We toured up to spectacular vantage points in the hills around Schutt where hostess Shirley offered up an array of baking and juices behind the Buick in the church parking lot.  As in earlier years, at our stop alongside Centennial Lake, we toasted our hosts with Dave’s maple Sortilege, adding a little warmth after the snow experience.  Early supper at the Red Neck Café in Calabogie nicely completed the tasty portion of the trip. Thanks to all of you for sharing in the laughs that made this day so enjoyable.

Jim Savage, our Christmas party steering person, is getting things underway for our Christmas Shine, Saturday, December 12th.  Socializing will begin at 5 p.m.  As usual a full-course meal will be catered at 7 p.m.  Thanks to Gale and John Hanson, door and dance prizes have been purchased and wrapped and we will have unique live entertainment. Tickets will be available for the dinner and dance by the middle of November from Wendy at TerMarsch Fuels.  A cut-off date of Friday December 4th for tickets is necessary to have numbers for the caterer.  The price for the tickets will be determined at our November meeting and to comply with the permit, you can place your LCBO order then too.

November is our nomination meeting.  Ron Roy has canvassed the membership to determine who may have interest in holding office in the coming two-year term. As we move into our fifty-third year of this car club, we are pleased to hear that there is healthy interest by some to step up into the executive positions.  I am pleased to say that this demonstrates that we have a healthy club of friends who want to see it all continue.

As a reminder for recipients of trophies last December, please return them for our November 4^th meeting at The Kingburger Restaurant so we can prepare them for this year’s awards.  

Please get your auction items ready.  Our October auction brought in $95.00 and a wealth of laughs as usual.

President's Page ~ October 2015

Our 1931 Model A has been sold and is now proudly owned by Vern & Linda Fairhead in Shawville. 

                                                                 We’re sure that we will see them on tours with us in future.

Looking back over the past month, we have had lots of activity, with the President’s Mystery Tour, Rodeo, Beachburg Kayaking Celebration parade, Barrie Flea Market and the tour to Mount St. Patrick.  We continue the tradition of many years of touring as ACCP members, but more importantly as friends.

Our annual tour to Ladysmith for Ocktoberfest is just around the corner.  Since the early 1970s our club has been involved with the parade and festivities in this wonderful community.  Let’s hope for good weather.  Shirley and Ellsworth Mullen have plans for a colour tour on the 18^th of October.  We look forward to what they have in store. And don’t forget the 50s – 60s show at the Bistro in Fort Coulonge on October 24^th.  ACCP has a table reserved and we know a lot of us will be there to swing to the music of Peter and the Elegants band from Toronto.

The end of this month, we turn our clocks back to Standard Time. It’s the time of year when we put our vehicles into storage for winter.  Speaking of which, our Christmas party takes place on Saturday, December 12 at the Pembroke Seniors’ Centre.  A number of volunteers have said they’ll step to help Lorne & Myrna, including: Jim Savage, Phil deGreef, Neil Videto, Dave Lemkay and others.  We will chat about this further at the October meeting.

Please get ready and give thought to the November meeting with nominations for the executive for the next term.  Ron Roy with the help of Lorne Troutman will be canvassing to create a slate of candidates to be voted in at the December meeting. This will be the end of two terms for me as president and I can say that in the past four years it has been a pleasure to serve the club this way.  However, four years is long enough and it’s time for a new person in this chair going forward. I will be pleased to hand over the gavel and offer my help, as might be needed, to the new president.

As I complete this page, I am glancing at two of Mae’s African violet plants in the dining room window from the auction. With the violets now living in Douglas, they have takin on an Afro-Irish nationality (LOL).  In speaking recently with Myrna Troutman, she says she is recuperating nicely after her ordeal and Dr. Lorne has taken on the caregiving of both Myrna and Sweet-Pea.  Lorne, we will leave it up to you to explain how you now have two ladies living under one roof at Maiden Lane.  

Let’s continue to look for meaningful treasures, may they be recycled, reused, reclaimed or even re-auctioned.  We look forward to the return of our auctioneer John Hanson to deal with these in his unique manner, adding funds to the coffers and often laughs to the meetings.

President's Page ~ September 2015

We’re still rolling out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer, those days of soda and pretzels and beer (and extreme heat and rain).  At our cottage last week we had monsoon rain enough to noticeably raise the level of Golden Lake.  I remember bringing in the hay in extreme heat  and  I recall my Dad saying to us “if we can get one more field in for today, we can all head to Lake Dore for a dip”.  What more of an incentive could a young person want?

We have all had a full calendar during July and August with car shows throughout the Valley and beyond and there’s more to come.  The front cover of this month's Flying Quail features those who joined in on our July ice cream tour hosted by Phil and Wendy.  This summer custom continues with another ice cream tour on the 19th hosted by Dawn and Ron Roy, active members who received the Presidents Trophy for having the most attended tours, events and meetings in 2014.      

This past month some of us attended the funeral of dear friend and member Frankie Toporowski-Juby and our condolences go out to Dub, or Del as she insisted on calling him.  We fondly remember Frankie for her hospitality on tours when they received us at Lochwinnoch and her flair with food that we all enjoyed.  Her beautiful gardens there should be a reminder to us to take the time to smell the roses. Life is so precious. 

Juliana and Ray Coulas celebrate their 50^th Anniversary, Sunday the 23^rd.  A beautiful picture of them on their wedding day accompanied the invitation to celebrate with them in the Eganville Leader and Pembroke Observer.  The President’s Mystery tour has been scheduled to take place on this same date, leaving the TerMarsch parking lot at 10am.  By the time you read this, the tour and its stops will no longer be a mystery.

Wayne Brohart has been busy in getting things ‘rounded up’ for the Road-A-o for August 30^th.  Start time 1pm at Lake Dore Park.  Remember to bring lawn chairs and refreshments.  Dan Hewitt is assisting Wayne in getting things together.  This is one of the clubs oldest traditions.  The food list is growing, but if you haven’t yet, please contact me by phone or email if you can add something to the list.

Our September 2^nd meeting will return to the Kingburger Restaurant in Pembroke.   For those of us who enjoy dining out, socializing and supper starts around 5:30 and the meeting at 7 p.m.

Obituary ~ Frankie Toporowski - Juby

TOPOROWSKI-JUBY, Frankie

(Retired Teacher Highland Park High School)

Peacefully at the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital on Friday morning, July 24th, 2015; Frankie Ann Toporowski-Juby of Lochwinnoch passed away following a brief illness. She was 76.

Dear daughter of the late Frank and Ann Toporowski. Beloved wife, partner and best friend of Delbert “Dub” Juby. Predeceased by her only brother, Jerry whose wife Judy lives in Barrie, Ontario.

Frankie will be lovingly remembered by Dub’s children: Linda and Dennis Ladouceur and their family; Tara and David Gurr and their family and the late Dale Juby and his family. An accomplished Registered Nurse; a dedicated Teacher; a passionate Gardener; Frankie will long live in the hearts of all whose lives she has touched.

Family and friends may pay their respects during visitation at the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior on Tuesday evening, July 28th from 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Wednesday morning, July 29th from 10 a.m. until the time of a funeral service to be conducted in the Pilon Family Chapel at 11 o’clock.

Interment will follow at the Castleford Union Cemetery. In memory of Frankie, a donation to the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital “Partners in Caring” Foundation would be appreciated by her family.

We’re experiencing an old-fashioned summer, with bountiful gardens and farm fields.  Our time is spent at the lake mainly and besides our resident Herons and ducks and now a porcupine taking up house in a poplar tree, we have a huge bullfrog, which we’ve named “Grandpa” in honour of my Dad Lorne, who used to sing base in the church choir. We’re serenaded each evening by Grandpa at the shore.  Life is good for obviously for him and for all of us.

In that vein, we have been blessed with good weather for our past two meetings at the Waterfront Park.  We look forward to the same for our August meeting and will be pleased to see those of our members who have recently been facing health issues.  We extend our best wishes to Frankie Juby, Mack Charron, Kevin O’Gorman and our auctioneer John Hanson. It’s not the same when you’re not able to join us.

As all families, Dave and I recently experienced a big change in our life.  A newer convertible replaces our Model A that is now, sold but it will continue to be enjoyed locally by friends who are making changes in their hobby stable, moving on from tall ships and War of 1812 re-enactments to a slower pace with a Model A.  One of the selling points for this couple was the pedigree of the Pembroke-bought Ford, so we’re happy too that it will remain in the Valley and quite possibly on future tours with us here and there. 

   

Thanks to Wendy and Phil for being the hosts of a lovely Ice Cream Tour, keeping up the summer tradition of a third Wednesday tour in town.  We appreciate the time dedicated to keeping our club active.

Our Road-A-O is taking place back at the Lake Dore Park on Sunday August 30th, starting at 2pm.  Wayne Brohart is our Ringmaster and we will have the assistance of a few other members to get things rolling.   Please give thought to what potluck contribution you can make for that afternoon.  Perhaps it will be most efficient to have coolers with salads, cold cuts and desserts.  If there is interest in setting up a BBQ for hot dogs or hamburgers, let’s talk about it at the meeting.  Plates, forks and knives will be purchased through the Club fund.   We will fine tune this thought at the August meeting followed up with the circulation of a list with known commitments.

With continued good weather, we congregate at Waterfront Park for 7:00 (bring lawn chairs) and if it’s raining, we’ll see you at The Kingburger.  Either way, bring along some interesting auction items, it makes for a good wrap up of the meeting. Until we meet again…       Delores
